Mission Leadership Training July 2012

This month the mission has been working on the Fundamentals of Teaching (See Page on right).  Instead of having a Zone Leader Council or District Development Meetings on Fridays, we had two Mission Leadership Training meetings.  President and Sister Baker and the Assistants taught lessons 1 - 4 in the first meeting and the Zone Leaders, with assistance from the District Leaders then trained their zones.  The second meeting we taught lessons 5-8 and the zone Leaders will finish training the rest of the mission this week.

General Authority Tour June 2012

We began our Zone Conference with Elder Olsen reminding the missionaries to drive defensively. Sister Baker reminded them be clean and presentable at all times. Sister Baker was also the first speaker at our regular meetings and talked about the atonement, using the story of Abigail in 1 Samuel 25 as a metaphor. President Baker talked about the Holy Ghost. This is always something the missionaries want to understand better so he used Elder Bednar’s talk from April 2011 to explain that the Holy Ghost is sometimes like turning on a light in a dark room, sometimes like the sun coming up, and sometimes like the sun coming up behind the fog (something we know a lot about in our mission.) The Holy Ghost is our foretaste of heaven so we wouldn’t want to do anything that would cause him to leave.

Our guests for Zone Conference were Elder Paul V. Johnson of the First Quorum of the Seventy and Sister Jill Johnson. Sister Johnson spoke about being obedient and submitting our will to the Father’s, referring to the converts of Ammon in the Book of Mormon. Elder Johnson chose three missionaries from the audience to deliver their talks on “How my understanding of the Doctrine of Christ affects the way I do missionary work.” Elder Johnson has a background in Educational Instruction (He is currently head of CES) so he taught the missionaries how facts need a different kind of teaching than skills do. He then explained that spiritual knowledge also requires a special kind of learning which includes making and keeping commitments. This is required of both missionaries and investigators. Elder Johnson also talked with the missionaries about how they can be “low maintenance, high yield.” Elder and Sister Johnson are seated in all of the zone pictures below.
